- Definition: Number of children ages 0-17 with substantiated cases of abuse or neglect (e.g., in 2020, 61,419 California children were found to have been abused or neglected).Number of children ages 0-17 with substantiated cases of abuse or neglect per 1,000 children (e.g., in 2020, 6.8 per 1,000 California children were found to have been abused or neglected).

- Footnote: Children with more than one substantiated case of maltreatment in a county are counted only once. Children with substantiated cases of maltreatment in more than one county are counted in each county but only once in California totals. The notation S refers to rates that have been suppressed because there were between 1 and 10 children found to have been abused or neglected, and to numbers and rates that have been suppressed by the California Child Welfare Indicators Project.
