U.S. Surgeon General Issues Call to Action for Suicide Prevention:
Find Youth Suicide Data for Your County

A newly released report from the Surgeon General renews a 2001 call to action to prevent suicide in the U.S. The 2012 National Strategy for Suicide Prevention: Goals and Objectives for Action sets forth a national agenda to guide suicide-prevention activities over the next decade. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for youth ages 15-24 nationwide and in California.

According to recently updated data on kidsdata.org, while the youth suicide rate has decreased in California over the last 15 years, the state still had 457 known suicides among ages 5-24 in 2010. See the number of youth suicides in your county>>

The Surgeon General report states that suicide remains a serious public health issue, and the problem goes beyond death - for every suicide, more than 30 others attempt suicide. Among U.S. youth, nearly 16% in grades 9 to 12 report having seriously considered suicide. See the report for ideas about effective strategies to prevent suicide.
