Childhood Cancer Awareness Month – See Latest California Data

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and Leukemia & Lymphoma Awareness Month. Recently updated data on kidsdata.org show that 9,101 California children ages 0-19 were diagnosed with cancer during 2005-2009, a rate of 17.4 diagnoses per 100,000 children/youth. This rate has increased from 16.4 in 2000-2004. See childhood cancer diagnosis rates by county >>

Over the last decade, Leukemia consistently has been the most common type of cancer among children statewide, with the majority of the diagnoses occurring before age 15.

Despite remarkable improvements in childhood cancer survival rates in recent decades, more children from birth to age 14 die of cancer than any other disease in California. Public policies can help ensure that children with cancer have comprehensive, appropriate and affordable health care, maximizing positive health outcomes and the quality of life for these children and their families.
